A brief story by Gene, W9CWG, via email on 4/12/2009 In 1910 a Paul Godley was enroute to U. of Illinois to take any courses they had on this new thing called radio. He had an EE degree from there. Enroute he stopped in Valpo since he had heard they were starting a course on wireless. They made him an instructor, he stayed for a year and then went on to U of I. He made history in early 20's when he held the series of tests to get a signal across the Atlantic. He made and sold AM radios at this time. and was using one of his radios at the Scotland end. Spark did not make it. He convinced Dr. Edwin Armstrong to use his newly developed MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amp) and Armstrong's signal was heard.
